Borman Home

Candace is in her 13th year at Borman K-8 after starting her education career at another Tucson Unified school initially. She found herself being transferred to Borman after her initial school closed positions due to enrollment issues. But she instantly fell in love with the school on the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and doesn’t plan to leave any time soon. 

While she, herself, doesn’t have experience in the military, Candace married into the military. So, she has a good understanding of what the community on base, and the kids that attend Borman, go through. 

“It’s different because a lot of them have been at different schools,” Candace said. “Some of them come from different countries. That’s military life. So, it’s definitely different for these kids, but they’re resilient.” 

Shantay knew she always wanted to work in education, but didn’t find the right opportunity until she and her family got stationed in Tucson. Shantay and her family were stationed at Davis-Monthan AFB 12 years ago after a stint in San Diego.  

Shantay’s first role at the K-8 was as a Borman mom. When her daughter was in 3rd grade with Mrs. Hodge, Shantay was inspired to go back to her dream. She was mentored by Mrs. Hodge and eventually was able to apply for an open position, which is hard to come by at Borman.  

Now, she’s accompanied at Borman by her youngest child, Austin. He’s currently in fifth grade and loves going to school with his mother, but the pair will split up at the end of the year when Austin finishes fifth grade as he will go to middle school off base.

Jennifer, who is in her second year at Borman, didn’t grow up in a military family, but did have extended family in the military. So, when an opportunity to work at Borman K-8 came up, she was more than up for it. 

“I had a couple of friends working here, and I liked the idea of contributing to the military community and being part of something bigger,” Jennifer said. “And I had heard good things about Borman, so I decided to make the switch over here.” 

Jennifer teaches science to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, and just loves working with the middle schoolers. She has had experience working with students from kinder all the way to 12th grade but thinks the middle school grade levels are the best.
